Most of the funding of KFMI should be directed to local civil society organizations (including non-governmental organizations) and other institutions working at the local level. Municipal, regional and national public institutions can receive funding provided that their projects are predominantly local level.
Support for initiatives developed mainly by local partners. Projects are selected and approved by the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine. CFMI also supports positive bilateral relations between Canada and recipient countries and their civil societies by deepening contacts and supporting local initiatives
The programme will aim to support civil society, expert community and think tanks, as well as local self-government in their activities
Supporting Ukraine’s reform agenda and Ukraine’s plan for recovery, supporting Crimean Platform as a consultative and coordination format in order to increase international response to the ongoing illegal occupation of Crimea and as an important tool for resisting Russian aggression, supporting work aimed to resist Russian propaganda bias in artificial intelligence (AI), will also consider small-scale projects on social cohesion and integration of IDPs

The Voices of Ukraine mentoring program is designed to help Ukrainian journalists increase their chances of employment in the Ukrainian media market and find their ideal team among employers

The project is aimed at strengthening the stability and efficiency of Ukrainian civil society, independent mass media, independent activists and journalists
