The first meeting of the National Commission on the Crimean Tatar language was held

March 6, 2023

On Monday, March 6, the first meeting of the National Commission, created by the government to implement the Strategy for the Development of the Crimean Tatar Language for 2022-2032, was held.

The event was attended by Permanent Representative of the President in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Tamila Tasheva, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov, Vice Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, as well as scientists and linguists from educational institutions.

The attention is focused on the main topics that will help to implement the first blood for the implementation of the Strategy, namely, the approval of the spelling of the Crimean Tatar language and the creation of a working group to consider this issue. Authoritative linguists will work to create an official spelling of the Crimean Tatar language based on the Latin alphabet.

“The Crimean Tatar language is a unique cultural heritage that is under the protection of UNESCO. And it is our responsibility to save it. Now we must focus on those areas that give real results. The first priority is to develop a spelling and legal framework for its official approval. This should be a signal to the occupants in Crimea that Ukraine will not allow the disappearance of the Crimean Tatar. We will make every effort to develop it, including through the activities of the National Commission”,- said Iryna Vereshchuk.

We remind you that the team of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center is doing everything to preserve and develop the language of the indigenous people of Ukraine. For example, in 2019, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center translated the General Declaration of Human Rights into the Crimean Tatar language and posted it on the official UN resource. In 2021, the European Convention on Human Rights was translated. And in January 2023, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people launched an information campaign Return the names – return Crimea, which seeks to restore the historical toponyms of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine.
