The CTRC continues to provide advice on the necessary documents for leaving the occupied territories

February 15, 2023

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center constantly advises citizens of Ukraine who find themselves in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine regarding the documents that must be obtained or obtained in advance in order to safely leave for the free territory of Ukraine or abroad. But sometimes there are situations when everything is just beginning with a consultation, and then there is a story that can become a movie script.

More than a month ago, relatives of a citizen of Ukraine turned to the CTRC for advice on preparing documents for returning to Ukraine. His parents, like the entire Crimean Tatar people, were forcibly deported in 1944 to Central Asia, from where he returned to Crimea in the late 1980s. But, unfortunately, in the years after the restoration of Ukraine’s independence in 1991 until the occupation of Crimea in 2014, his family failed to complete all the necessary Ukrainian documents. After the occupation, there was virtually no opportunity to finalize Ukrainian documents in Crimea, and at the end of 2022 they ended up in Kazakhstan without the opportunity to return to Ukraine.

Thanks to the interaction of the lawyer of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center Volodymyr Liashenko with the bodies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Migration Service, within the framework of the activities of the Coordination Headquarters on ensuring the departure of Ukrainian citizens from the temporarily occupied territory through third countries and returning to Ukraine, it was possible to organize the return of a citizen to Ukraine through Turkey and Moldova. But the story did not end there, because now it is necessary to complete the production of Ukrainian documents that were not made before.

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center is constantly working to assist citizens of Ukraine in leaving the occupied territories through third countries and returning to the controlled territory of Ukraine from abroad and calls on citizens of Ukraine to prepare the necessary documents in advance for a possible departure so as not to find themselves in a difficult situation later.

We provide advisory assistance in matters related to the preparation by citizens of Ukraine of documents required when leaving the occupied territories for third countries. Please contact us at least 5 days before departure by phone: +38 067 343 74 54 (Signal, Telegram).
