Myth about the place names of Crimea: Yevpatoriia is a Greek name

November 2, 2023

Did you know that Yevpatoriia is not a Greek name at all? And it has nothing to do with the Greeks at all!

Yevpatoriia is the pseudo-Greek name of the city of Crimea, because it was invented by Catherine II as part of the Greek project in 1784.

Moreover, as always, the Russians simply stole this name…

Thus, the city of Kezlev was renamed to Yevpatoriia, which means noble. But in fact, this name was borrowed from the city of the same name, which existed on the site of modern Inkerman, named after the Pontic king Mithridates VI Eupator.

So should we return the authentic names of Crimean cities or will we continue to use fictitious names of Russians?
