On Thursday, March 7, Chairman of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, member of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Eskender Bariiev took part as a reviewer in the «Expert Meeting–Input to the Development of a Global Situation Analysis on the Health of Indigenous Peoples», organized by the WHO (World Health Organization)/WHO Division for Human Rights, Department of Gender, Human Rights and Equality (GRE).
The purpose of this meeting was to provide input to the research protocol for the development of a global analysis of the situation of indigenous peoples’ health.
In May 2023, the 76th World Health Assembly adopted Resolution 76.16 on Indigenous Peoples’ Health, which calls on WHO, among other things, to develop a Global Action Plan for Indigenous Peoples’ Health. The research underlying the situation analysis will contribute to the development of the Global Action Plan.
«In my speech, I thanked for conducting this study and noted that if we are talking about the Eastern European region, I would draw attention to the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the health of indigenous peoples in Ukraine and Russia. If we are talking about the indigenous peoples of Ukraine, they are under occupation and are increasingly subjected to persecution and forced mobilization into the Russian army. The mobilization also affects the indigenous peoples of Russia. This will have serious consequences for the reproductive health of indigenous peoples,» – Bariiev emphasized.
