Occupants called for military service over 500 Crimeans

October 6, 2020

More than 500 Crimeans from the occupied Sevastopol will be sent to serve in the Black Sea Fleet and the troops of the Southern Military District during the autumn draft of 2020. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.

It is noted that the first dispatch of recruits from the assembly point of the military commissariat of Sevastopol is scheduled for October 14.

“After sending the young replenishment to military units, the servicemen will be placed in a separate barracks for 14 days, their health will be monitored constantly, with thermometry at least three times a day, while food and replenishment training will be organized separately from the rest of the servicemen”, the department claimed.

Representatives of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center have repeatedly noted on international platforms that the legal status of Crimeans is regulated by the IV Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Population, namely Article 51, which states that the occupying power cannot force Crimeans to serve in its armed or auxiliary forces. Any pressure or propaganda in favor of voluntary admission to the army is prohibited.

Also, according to article 30 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, military activities cannot be carried out without the consent of the indigenous people on their territory.

We demand Russia to abolish the conscription for military service of citizens living in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as adhere to its international obligations.
