A citizen of Ukraine can enter Crimea only with Ukrainian passport – State Border Service

February 5, 2018

A citizen of Ukraine can enter the territory of Russia annexed Crimea only with the Ukrainian passport. The deputy head of the State Border Service of Ukraine Oleg Slobodyan told “Krym. Realii TV” while commenting the procedure for identification of citizens of Ukraine at the administrative border between Crimea and the mainland part of Ukraine.

He clarified that the rule of mandatory provision of the Ukrainian passport does not concern the departure from the annexed Crimea to the mainland of Ukraine, reports "Krym.Realii"

"If a citizen (Ukraine- KR) comes  (from Crimea to Ukrainian check point -KR) and says :" I do not have a passport, but I have a driver's license, I am a citizen of Ukraine", we check him.  We try to  identify him  and if he does not have any problems with the legislation, then, of course, we let  him enter the  mainland of Ukraine", noted Slobodyan.

According to him, if a citizen of Ukraine needs to  to return to the temporarily occupied territory, he will certainly need to provide the border guard  the passport of a citizen of Ukraine.

The site  reminds that since January 1, 2018 at the checkpoints across the state border of Ukraine, the biometric data recording system has been activated. The new control system at the border crossing concerns citizens of the states of "migration risk" – only 70 states, including Russia.
