We would like to remind Ukrainian and international society of the terrible crime against humanity – the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944.
A total of 238,500 people were deported from Crimea at that time, and in the first years 46.2% of all those deported died.
It is important to constantly raise this topic, because the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people is a wound that does not heal. It remains open until the crime is condemned by the whole world and its consequences are overcome.
Since the occupation of Crimea began in 2014, thousands of Crimean Tatars have been forced to leave their land again due to political persecution. The situation worsened after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the start of mobilization into the Russian army.
Impunity breeds new crimes. That is why the world must condemn the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 so that this will never happen again. This is especially important now, during a full-scale war, when Russia continues the genocide of the entire Ukrainian people.
We remind you that the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people has already been recognized as an act of genocide by 7 countries: Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Canada, Poland, Estonia and the Czech Republic.
The Crimean Tatar Resource Center and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people are systematically working with the parliaments of different countries to ensure that more states join this list.
We have prepared a package of documents on the recognition of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people as an act of genocide, which has already been sent to 40 countries. It includes:
– the appeal of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people to all parliaments of the UN member states to recognize the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people as an act of genocide;
– the appeal of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center to the parliaments of the countries of the world;
– the copies of the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine “On recognition of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people”;
– the legal qualification of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people as an international crime against an indigenous people.
We are continuing this work to ensure that the deportation of Crimean Tatars is officially recognized as genocide worldwide.
