Mustafa Dzhemilev reacts to Polish foreign minister’s words on Crimea

20 September The leader of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev, has reacted to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski’s proposal to transfer Crimea under the UN mandate.

He reported about this on his Facebook page.

‘To transfer under the control of the UN for a few years it would be advisable to Russia itself, because without the introduction of external rule at least for a few years, this country will most likely never become civilised and democratic,’ – said Mustafa Dzhemilev.

He noted that he personally knows the minister and believes that he also wants an end to the bloody war.

The leader added that ‘in accordance with the norms of international law, it is not acceptable to change the borders between countries through armed occupation and holding so-called referendums on the occupied territories by the occupier. These norms require unconditional withdrawal of its troops from the occupied territories, as well as responsibility for aggression and compensation for the damage caused to the country that was attacked.’

Therefore, the task of the international community is not to find out what value the stolen and occupied territories have for the invader, but to make every effort to return the stolen goods as soon as possible and bring the perpetrator to international criminal responsibility. This is in the interest of both the country under attack and the entire world community.

The proposal to hold a referendum on its future status in Crimea in 20 years under the auspices of the UN is also quite unacceptable.

Mustafa Dzhemilev stressed that referendums in a particular country, if they are necessary, can only be held by the country that owns this territory legally, and the UN or other international organisations can only send their observers to ensure transparency and fairness during their conduct.

‘I very much hope that Mr Sikorski will reconsider his position on Crimea,’ stressed Mustafa Dzhemilev .
