October 1 – International Day of Older Persons

October 1, 2024

On the initiative of the United Nations, the world celebrates International Day of Older Persons on October 1.

The so-called “head” of the occupied Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, posted a greeting on his telegram channel on this day and noted that “caring for the elderly is the most important area of social policy. Among the key tasks is the organization and improvement of the system of long-term care for the elderly.”

However, at the same time, the occupiers are doing the exact opposite in Crimea. After all, people regardless of age and gender are subjected to repression.

According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, there are currently 17 elderly political prisoners in Russian detention centers and colonies:

  • Abbozov Seityaga – 66 years old
  • Renat Aliev – 60 years old
  • Bekirov Inver – 61 years old
  • Gaziev Servet – 64 years old
  • Goldenberg Valeriya- 63 years old
  • Dovgopola Halyna – 69 years old
  • Eyupov Azamat – 61 years old
  • Kiselyov Oleksiy – 60 years old
  • Lytvyniuk Oleksandr – 63 years old
  • Maladika Volodymyr – 62 years old
  • Mambetov Khalil – 69 years old
  • Muratov Zekirya – 67 years old
  • Ruslan Nagayev – 60 years old
  • Omerov Enver – 62 years old
  • Prykhodko Oleh – 66 years old
  • Seidaliev Nasrullah – 64 years old
  • Tsygipa Sergey – 63 years old

Most of them have already been sentenced by the occupiers to terms of 18 to 5 years in prison.

The CTRC emphasizes that, given the age of these political prisoners, such terms may prove fatal for them. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the fact that each of the political prisoners has severe and chronic illnesses, which are especially manifested due to inadequate conditions of detention in pre-trial detention centers and prisons, systematic disregard for complaints by law enforcement agencies, as well as inadequate and untimely medical care.

According to the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, all prisoners are entitled to regular medical care, which they usually do not receive. And long sentences in colonies and prisons for elderly people with health problems are a separate form of torture.

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center demands that the Russian Federation immediately release all of the above-mentioned individuals and other political prisoners of the Kremlin, and stop systematically violating human rights in the occupied Crimea.
