Russian archaeologists and property developers have completely destroyed an authentic monument of world significance in Crimea – Tauric Chersonese and exported some finds to the Russian Federation. On the site of excavations built a new outdoor theatre.
According to the researcher, the Russians replace the original monuments with new buildings, destroying their authenticity.
“Now there are negative processes with the only monument of world significance, which we managed to nominate and put on the list of monuments in Crimea – with the Tauric Chersonese “.
Kravchenko recalled that in 2015-2016 developers blocked observation decks with archaeological remains that were on the surface: towers, walls and columns. Later, according to the expert, an open theatre was put on the site of the ancient citadel, which creates a load of about a tonne on the original structure.
Some artefacts from the UNESCO heritage site were taken by the occupants to museums in the Russian Federation. Among them are frescoes, crockery, household items and icons, the expert said.
Now the construction of the archaeological park “New Chersonese” has begun, on the site of the remains of the Necropolis.
“The Russians did not understand anything about the geological situation at this place, so they started removing the soil on the territory with ordinary excavators. Somehow they unearthed an ancient spring there, so everything flooded,” Evelina Kravchenko said.
The new archaeological park, built by the occupants, overlaps the ruins of Chersoneses. The researcher said that several excavated objects were gradually moved and rebuilt elsewhere. On the site of the ancient settlement Russians put the Cathedral of St Vladimir, which is subordinate and consecrated by the Moscow Patriarchate.
We would like to remind that, Tauric Chersonese is a unique historical monument of the ancient era. This is the only monument in Crimea, which has world significance and is included in the UNESCO heritage list.
