Russia’s maritime oil exports: connection with a full-scale war in Ukraine

Not only Russian, but also Kazakh crude oil is exported from the Black Sea. According to the expert, maritime oil exports are the only answer to the question “How long will Putin’s Russia be able to finance the war against Ukraine?”

In April-May 2024, the Monitoring Group began manually recording Russian maritime oil exports from the Black and Baltic Sea ports for the first time.

The volume of Russian maritime exports of crude oil from the Baltic is almost 3 times higher than from the Black Sea, although the ports of the water bodies are equally busy. Not only Russian, but also Kazakh crude oil, which is not under sanctions, is exported from the Black Sea.

The total monthly exports from these 2 seas are about 15 million tonnes of Russian crude oil and 6-7 million tonnes of oil products.
