From the very beginning of the occupation of Crimea, the Russian Federation launched an active repressive campaign against the peninsula’s residents, in particular, a number of administrative and criminal proceedings were opened against representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people and pro-Ukrainian activists.
Among the victims of the occupation of Crimea, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center identifies the category of “Crimean political prisoners whose rights are restricted outside places of detention”. In particular, this category can include people who have restrictions, probation, suspended sentence, administrative supervision or who are under house arrest.
These restrictions are designed to make civil life as difficult as possible for political prisoners after serving their unlawful sentence. For example, people who are under these restrictions cannot get full employment, medical care or even social benefits. We would like to add that the Russian Federation is using absolutely all the tools of the repressive machine for exemplary punishment for demonstrating a pro-Ukrainian position in Crimea.
Now there are 331 citizens of Ukraine who are being prosecuted in criminal “cases” for the period of occupation of Crimea, 39 of whom have restrictions or probation, 23 of them are the representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.
