Amnesty International has published a report outlining the systematic oppression and harassment of the indigenous population of the Crimean peninsula.

“Russia has systematically sought to eradicate Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar identities by disrupting, restricting or banning the use of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages in education, media, national celebrations and other spheres of life, and oppressing religious and cultural practices that do not conform to those endorsed by Moscow. It has also forcibly transferred population out of Crimea and transferred Russian civilian population in Crimea,”- said Patrick Thompson Amnesty International’s Ukraine researcher

The report also mentions the extermination of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages through the use of threats and repression against teachers, students and parents who disagree with the current regime.

“Russia must end its practices of suppressing and eradicating non-Russian identities in the territories it occupies, and stop its violations of international humanitarian and human rights law,” the report adds.
