Occupation authorities forcibly displaced people from Crimea and transported Russian civilians there – Amnesty International

March 18, 2024

Amnesty International in its report published to mark the tenth anniversary of the illegal occupation of the peninsula noted the problem of preserving Crimea’s demographic diversity.

“Russia has systematically attempted to eradicate Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar national identities by interrupting, restricting and banning the use of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages in education, media, during national celebrations and in other spheres of life, suppressing religious and cultural practices that do not conform to those encouraged by Moscow. The occupation authorities have also forcibly displaced people from Crimea and transported Russian civilians there,” , – said Patrick Thompson, Ukraine Researcher at Amnesty International

In particular, he noted that the Russian Federation attempted to legitimise the occupation of Crimea by introducing policies aimed at suppressing non-Russian national identities throughout the peninsula.
