January 24, 2024

The Russian State Duma in the first reading adopted a package of bills that strengthen responsibility for the leakage of personal data of Russians. This was reported by Russian MP Alexander Khinshtein.

“The bill establishing criminal liability for the illegal use and transfer, collection and storage of personal data is aimed at combating the avalanche-like growth of crimes where this information is used”,- he reports.

The concept of illegal data collection also includes those situations when information is collected from sources that are easy to access. Thus, this makes it difficult to conduct investigative journalism.

The maximum sanction is imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years with a fine of up to 3 million rubles.
