During illegal excavations in Khersones, Russian archaeologists unearthed a unique stone structure from ancient times.
The Union of Archaeologists of Ukraine noted that it is both a public building and a mausoleum.
Illegal excavations violate international law, in particular Art. 9 of the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property, which, in the event of armed conflict, prohibits the occupying State from carrying out in occupied territory any archaeological excavation, unless it is required solely for the protection, recording or preservation of cultural property.
