Destruction of Kakhovka dam will cause many problems – Bariiev

June 6, 2023

Eskender Bariiev, the Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, member of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, spoke about the consequences of the Kakhovka dam explosion on the We Are Ukraine TV channel.

“At the moment, there is a water supply schedule in the major cities of Crimea, and the quality of water has significantly decreased. After the Kakhovka dam explosion, water supplies via the North Crimean Canal will most likely be cut off. It is worth noting that the destruction of the dam will cause many problems, as a drought is expected in Crimea in 2025. The water that is now flowing down collects many household items, garbage, and pollution along the way, which can cause the spread of infectious diseases not only in southern Ukraine but also in Crimea. The dam’s explosion has significantly disrupted the ecosystem of the Kakhovka reservoir and other water objects. There is a possibility of mass death of aquatic organisms: fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and microorganisms. This also risks disrupting the natural habitat of fish, mollusks, crustaceans, birds, amphibians and other animals,” Barieev said.

The expert also noted that the Russian Federation and the occupation authorities blame the AFU for the disaster.

We would like to add that at the NSDC meeting, it was said that 150 tonnes of oil had been released into the Dnipro River as a result of the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, and there is a risk of further outflow of more than 300 tonnes.
