The Russian Federation blew up the Kakhovka HPP and caused one of the largest man-made disasters in Europe

June 6, 2023

This terrorist act created a mortal danger for Ukrainian citizens in the settlements on both banks of the Dnieper below the Kakhovka Reservoir. This is an undeniable act of ecocide and an obvious war crime, the impact of which goes far beyond the borders of Ukraine and affects the ecosystem of the entire Black Sea region.

The head of the Kherson Regional State Administration reported that there is a threat of flooding of 80 settlements on the right and left banks of the Kherson region. President Zelenskyy convenes an urgent meeting of the National Security Council.

What are the consequences of undermining the Kakhovka HPP:

  • Hundreds of thousands of people will be affected
  • Suspension of water supply to certain regions
  • More than 80 settlements in the Kherson region may be flooded
  • There will not be enough water for cooling at the ZNPP
  • Crimea will remain without water for a long time (perhaps years)
  • The question arises of the functioning of chemical industry plants in Northern Crimea

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has started a pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings on the facts of ecocide and violation of the laws and customs of war (Article 441, Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
