Crimean Tatar political prisoner Dzhemil Gafarov died in Russian pre-trial detention center

February 10, 2023

The defendant in the second Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir case Dzhemil Gafarov died in the pre-trial detention center of Novocherkassk.

We remind you that for almost 4 years Russian occupants kept 60-year-old Dzhemil Gafarov in the dungeons of the FSB, and in January 2023 he was criminally sentenced to 13 years in prison in a colony.

The CTRC team systematically drew the attention of the international community to the “case” against Dzhemil Gafarov. Considering that he was an elderly citizen with a disability and many chronic diseases, the course of which worsened in prison, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center stated that for him 13 years in prison is in fact equal to a death sentence!

The CTRC expresses sincere condolences to the wife and three children of the political prisoner, as well as to all relatives and friends of Dzhemil Gafarov. We emphasize that the responsibility for the death of a man lies solely with the terrorist state – the Russian Federation.

Unfortunately, this is the second time this has happened in the past week. Recently it became known about the death of another political prisoner Kostiantyn Shyrynh.

We once again call on the Ukrainian authorities to intensify their efforts to release/exchange the Kremlin’s political prisoners, in particular with the involvement of foreign and international institutions. After all, we see that this is not the first and probably not the last death.
