CTRC sent a report to the UN on the violation of women’s rights in the occupied Crimea

February 2, 2022

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center sent a report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, as well as to the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Ms. Rim Alsalem, on the topic Violence against indigenous Crimean Tatar women and girls.

The report was provided to be presented at the 50th session of the Human Rights Council. This information will also be used in the development of a general recommendation by the Committee on Elimination and Discrimination against Women on the rights of indigenous women and girls.

The CTRC provided information on the situation with violations of women's rights in the occupied Crimea, including violations against Crimean Tatar activists, and also gave a number of examples of such illegal actions by the Kremlin.

In Crimea, women are systematically persecuted for their civil position. The most vulnerable group are wives, mothers and daughters of Crimean political prisoners.

Also, after the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the political rights of people on the peninsula began to be severely limited due to their uncomfortable civic position for the Russian Federation. Hundreds of activists found themselves under such repressions, among which a significant part are women representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.

“In this regard, we demand from Russia to stop discrimination and violence against indigenous Crimean Tatar women and girls, as well as to stop the illegal persecution of all residents of Crimea and the illegal occupation of Crimea, the homeland of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people”,- the report said.
