On Thursday, December 9, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft strengthened resolution on the human rights situation in the occupied Crimea. 63 countries voted for the corresponding decision, 22 voted against, 55 abstained.
The key innovations were the reflection in the title of the resolution of the status of Crimea as a temporarily occupied peninsula, support for cooperation in the Crimean Platform, emphasis on Russia's responsibility for observing the rights of the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of Crimea, the demand to cancel the sentences passed in absentia against the Crimean Tatar people and Crimean Tatars.
The resolution also condemns the buildup of the military group in Crimea, as well as the policy of forced change in the demographic composition.
“The UN General Assembly approved a strengthened resolution on the militarization of Crimea. It contains important support for the Crimean platform, calls on the Russian Federation to stop the transfer of weapons and military personnel to the peninsula, to stop violating the freedom of navigation in the Black and Azov Seas”,- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote via his Twitter page.
