MP from the European Solidarity faction Volodymyr Ariev received a response from the Head of the Human Rights Subcommittee of the European Parliament Maria Arena to a letter dated April 20, 2021 regarding the situation of the Crimean Tatars in the occupied Crimea. In turn, Maria Arena assured that she continues to actively monitor the situation of the indigenous people on the peninsula.
In her letter, Maria Arena recalled the resolution of the European Parliament on the implementation of the EU Association Agreement with Ukraine dated February 11, 2021, which calls for the immediate release of all citizens of Ukraine on the Crimean peninsula and in Russia, including Crimean Tatar activists.
“Let me assure you that, as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, I will continue to monitor the situation w[ith the Crimean Tatars in Ukraine”,- she said.
On March 10, MP from the European Solidarity faction Volodymyr Ariev also publicly supported the campaign MP, Help the Prisoners of the Kremlin! and took patronage over three political prisoners: over the defendant in the so-called first Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir case Rustem Ismailov, as well as over the defendants in the so-called Bilohirsk Hizb ut-Tahrir case – Enver Omerov and Riza Omerov.
Volodymyr Ariev systematically raises the topic of Crimean political prisoners, in particular the problems of the Omerov family, at various international platforms. Mr. Ariev spoke at the EuroNest parliamentary assembly, where he drew attention to the practice of persecuting entire families, citing the example of the Omerov family, in which all the men – in which all the men – Enver Omerov – father, Riza Omerov – son and Rustem Ismailov – son-in-law – were arrested for far-fetched reasons.
In addition, the MP systematically sends letters to international organizations: twice to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maria Pejcinovic-Buric and the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunya Mijatovic. In his letters, he also recalls the situation of the Crimean Tatar people on the peninsula, paying special attention to his words. Ariev calls on the international community to recognize men as political prisoners.
He also recalled the Omerov family on May 18, the day of commemoration of the victims of the Crimean Tatar genocide.
