On Wednesday, May 19, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives approved a resolution not recognizing the annexation of Crimea. It was reported by the Voice of America.
The bill was supported by American lawmakers from both parties: from the Republican and from the US Democratic parties.
“Although countries in the world can understand very differently the norms and approaches to fundamental issues like diplomacy, trade, human rights protection, civil liberties, and others, there is no basis on which there is wider agreement, as the illegality of invading the territory of another state. However, this is exactly what Russia did during the illegal invasion in 2014 and illegal claims to sovereign rights in Crimea”,- said the chairman of the Committee, Democratic Congressman Meeks.
Republican congressman and one of the co-sponsors of the resolution, Steve Shebot, noted that some European countries, after seven years of Russian aggression, have become accustomed to the Crimea issue.
