April 25, 2021

The German Bundestag has ratified the International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention No. 169 on the Protection of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This convention guarantees indigenous peoples their rights to preserve their cultural identity and participate in national decision-making, as well as to land and resources.

“This move has made Germany the 24th country in the world to adopt the convention. The Climate Alliance and its indigenous partners have campaigned for the convention in various countries for many years. The Convention is a decisive step towards strengthening the rights of Indigenous Peoples”, – said Eskender Bariiev, Head of the Board of the CTRC.

European countries that have ratified this Convention; The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany do not have their own indigenous communities. By doing so, they send a signal of solidarity and global responsibility.
