USA: The militarization of Crimea is a threat to common security

February 24, 2021

Richard Mills, Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, said that the militarization of Crimea is a serious and growing threat to general security. He stressed that America will maintain its sanctions against the Russian Federation until Russia changes its course.

Mills called on UN member states to support General Assembly resolutions that draw attention to the human rights situation and the militarization of Crimea.

“The United States does not recognize the annexation of the peninsula by the Russian Federation and will maintain sanctions until that country changes course. It is disturbing to report that the Russian Federation has intensified its efforts to destabilize Ukraine, while falsely portraying itself as an intermediary, although in fact, Russia is the initiator of the crisis”,- he said.

The US spokesman described the militarization of Crimea as a serious and growing threat to overall security, adding that there is no doubt that the Russian Federation continues to fuel this deadly conflict.

In addition, the diplomat called on the Russian Federation to provide safe, timely and unimpeded access to all humanitarian workers and observers from the OSCE and the United Nations to those areas under its control.
