January 26, 2021

In 2020, 424 cases of violations of the right to a fair trial were recorded, 355 of which were against representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. This figure is less than last year for the same period: 692 cases were recorded in 2019, 492 in 2018. This is stated in the analysis of human rights violations in Crimea over 2020 by the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.

Nevertheless, such statistics indicate the deliberate retention of more than 100 political prisoners in custody, the illegal use of Russian legislation for political purposes, in particular, with the aim of suppressing the non-violent struggle of the Crimean Tatars and pro-Ukrainian activists and their protest against the occupation of Crimea. During the reporting period, there were massive cases of prolongation of detention, rejection of appeals and petitions of lawyers. Thus, 16 people were sentenced to terms ranging from 3.8 to 19 years in prison, 47 were taken into custody. The CTRC also recorded 189 cases of prolongation of detention terms.

We remind that according to the monitoring data, during the reporting period, 52 searches were recorded on the peninsula, 280 cases of arrests, 92 cases of interrogations, interviews and conversations, 252 – arrests: 47 – new arrests, 16 – sentences, 189 – extensions of detention under guards to political prisoners of Crimea. In addition, 424 cases of violations of the right to a fair trial, 138 to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health are known.
