At the moment, there is an ecocide of Crimea – Bariiev

December 30, 2020

The Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Eskender Bariiev, in an interview with Apostrophe TV, stressed that due to the irrational use of natural water sources by the invaders, the ecocide of Crimea is actually taking place.

“The situation with water is getting worse every day. In particular, in a number of villages in the Bakhchisaray region, water in wells disappeared. In Yalta and in Maly Mayak, water was supplied less often – twice a day, that is, in the morning and in the evening. And in Sevastopol there are large water problems”,- he said.

Bariiev noted that the occupation authorities are reacting to this: they tried to desalinate the water and collect clouds over Crimea, but all these projects failed.

“That is, on the one hand, they are trying to send a message to the Crimeans, our compatriots, that they want to do something. On the other hand, we see that due to the irrational use of natural water sources, the ecocide of Crimea is actually taking place”,- the expert explained.

The member of the Mejlis stressed that the Ukrainian state, the official authorities and public organizations need to prepare for the forum, which will be held in 2021. During the event, complete and clear information about the situation with the ecosystem in Crimea and the influence of the occupiers on Crimea should be presented.

“With regard to water, we, for our part, sent a report to the Special Rapporteur on Environment and Human Rights, who will prepare a report in March. We hope that information on the irrational use of water by the occupiers will still be announced. His report will be devoted specifically to the problems of drinking water”,- he added.
