On Thursday, August 27, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights published a report on human rights violations in the occupied Crimea committed during criminal proceedings and trials between April 14, 2014 and April 13, 2020.
The report highlights that the most common violations are illegal arrests and detention, lengthy trials, lack of access to lawyers, torture and ill-treatment, and lack of effective remedies.
“For more than six years, we have been documenting human rights violations in criminal cases in the context of conflicts in eastern Ukraine and Crimea. We call on those responsible for these violations to stop this illegal practice and ensure that the right to a fair trial for all people is respected”,- the message claimed.
The report stressed that the authorities of the Russian Federation in Crimea must respect the rights to a fair trial in accordance with its obligations as an occupying state under international humanitarian and human rights law.
