Russian court banned political prisoners from speaking Crimean Tatar

August 18, 2020

In the Southern District Military Court of the city of Rostov-on-Don, another court session was held in relation to the defendants in the so-called Alushta Hizb ut-Tahrir case, during which political prisoners were forbidden to speak in the Crimean Tatar language, because “the attempts to conduct speech in another language will be regarded as a violation of order”. This was reported by the Crimean Solidarity public association.

“Saprunov calls requests for an interpreter “sabotage”, an attempt to slow down the process. Additionally, the presiding judge Saprunov explained to the defendants that the court session is being conducted in Russian and attempts to conduct a speech in another language will be regarded as a violation of order, a remark will be made”,- message.

It is also noted that the court did not see any grounds for canceling the arrest, the decision to extend the measure of restraint was left unchanged.

We remind that on June 10 and 11, 2019, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol chose a preventive measure in the form of detention until August 5 to the Crimean Tatars detained after searches – Riza Omerov, Enver Omerov, Ayder Dzhepparov, Eskender Suleimanov, Ruslan Nagaev, Eldar Kantimirov, Ruslan Mensutov and Lenur Khalilov. Subsequently, their detention was extended several times.

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center calls on the international community, international human rights organizations to increase pressure on the Russian Federation and the occupying power of Crimea, in order to end political persecution and cancel previous court decisions.
