Ukraine calls on the international community to increase pressure on the Russian Federation due to the situation in Crimea

June 18, 2020

On Wednesday, June 17, during the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, the delegation of Ukraine called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia due to the ban of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. The Russian Federation continues the policy of repression against the indigenous population, which contradicts the order of the International Court of Justice. This was reported by the press service of the Foreign Ministry.

“The delegation of Ukraine strongly condemned the deterioration of the human rights situation against the backdrop of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the territory of the Crimean peninsula temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. It is noted that Russia with absolute disrespect to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations ignores its Order on temporary measures in the case of Ukraine against the Russian Federation on the application of International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The order, in particular, requires restoring the work of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and protecting the identity of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar people under temporary occupation”,- the statement said.

The delegation of Ukraine called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia to fulfill its order of the International Court of Justice and other obligations in accordance with international law.
