May 12, 2020

On Monday, May 11, the US Congress introduced a new draft resolution that requires the Russian Federation to immediately release political prisoners and calls on Trump administration to impose sanctions on Russian government officials responsible for these human rights violations. This was reported via the website of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US House of Representatives.

“Vladimir Putin is a cruel authoritarian with a long track record of silencing civil liberties, including freedom of press, freedom of speech, political opposition, and democracy. We need only to look at the violent killing of Putin-critic Boris Nemtsov to see how Putin brutally suppresses those who speak out against him”,- the report said.

The resolution emphasizes on the need to release all those designated as political prisoners and impose sanctions on Russian government officials responsible for these human rights abuses.
