70-year-old woman was not able to leave the occupied Crimea, despite a vital reason

April 8, 2020

On Sunday, April 5, a 70-year-old woman tried to leave for Kyiv from the occupied Crimea, as she is registered in one of the largest cancer centers in Ukraine, where she is undergoing treatment. Russian border guards did not grant her the passage because she “has a Russian passport and can be treated on the peninsula.” It is reported by the Crimean human rights group.

“On April 5, a Crimean woman and her husband tried to leave Crimea through the Russian checkpoint in Armyansk (by the Ukrainian checkpoint Kalanchak). Previously, the woman called the “hot lines” of the Ukrainian and Russian border services. She was told that she would be able to leave, because she had vital reason. A woman has a Ukrainian passport and all necessary medical documents confirming the diagnosis and the need for treatment”,- the report said.

It is noted that the Russian border guards refused to grant the passage to a sick woman, referring to the fact that as a resident of Crimea she has a Russian passport, and she, in their opinion, can be treated at the place of her registration on the peninsula.

“They told her that the Ukrainian border guards would not let her in, and then they, the Russian border guards, would not let her go back to Crimea, and she would remain in neutral territory, between the checkpoints”,- said a relative of the woman.
