ARC Prosecutor’s Office began criminal proceedings due to the so-called case against Refat Chubarov

March 24, 2020

The prosecutor’s office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea began criminal proceedings due to the fact that the Russian Federation is again trying to apply its criminal law in the occupied territory of Ukraine, opening another so-called case against the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov. This was reported by the press service of the ARC prosecutor’s office.

“The Russian Federation is again trying to retrospectively apply its criminal law in the occupied territory of Ukraine, allegedly, for organizing mass riots near the Parliament of Crimea on February 26, 2014, this time the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov is accused”,- the statement said.

It is noted that on this fact the prosecutor's office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea acted according to part 1 of article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of laws and customs of warfare).

“Thus, the occupant’s “law enforcement officers”, in violation of the requirements of Article 70 of the Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949, are trying to prosecute people for events that occurred before the occupation began by opening the so-called criminal cases on far-fetched facts”,- the prosecutor’s office representatives added.

We remind that in the occupied Crimea, the so-called “Russian Investigative Committee” instituted a so-called criminal case against the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov, who is suspected of allegedly organizing mass riots in 2014.
