On Tuesday the 11th of June the European Court of Human Rights came to a decision on the case of the political prisoner and a severely disabled person Edem Bekirov, who was accused of illegal storage of ammunition and explosives in the occupied Crimea. The court demands to hospitalize Bekirov as soon as possible. This is reported by Crimea.Realia media agency with reference to his lawyer Islyam Velilyaev.
"I, as a lawyer, will send the following decision to the investigator in the case of Edem Bekirov and the Human Rights Ombudswoman Tetiana Moskalkova." If the investigator does not react, I will be obliged to address the court. "Over the course of the last 6 months our client is slowly dying in the detention center, and every day is at stake", – Velilyaev stresses out.
Bekirov’s lawyer believes that this decision is quite unexpected, but certainly the right one considering the situation.
According to Rule 39 of the ECHR, which was applied to Edem Bekirov’s case, the Russian authorities are obliged to hospitalize him immediately outside the penitentiary system..
We remind that on the 12th of December, 2018, while trying to enter the Crimea through Chongar checkpoint, Ukrainian national and Crimean Tatar Edem Bekirov, born in 1961, a resident of Novooleksiivka village of the Kherson region, was arrested by the Russian border guards. He was detained at around 08:30 while undergoing passport control procedures. Until the evening his location remained unknown.
On the 13th of December, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol arrested Edem Bekirov until the 11th of February 2019. On the 20th of December the FSB charged him with illegal trafficking of weapons and the illegal transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carriage of explosives (Part 2 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and Part 2 of Article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
On the 6th of June 2019, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol once again extended his detention term until the 12th of August.
Edem Bekirov is one of the Crimean Tatar public activists of the village Novooleksiivka village. He is severely disabled. In January 2018, he underwent a complicated heart surgery, during which he had 4 shunts implanted. Moreover, the man is an amputee having his right leg removed below the knee and thus forced to wear a removable prosthesis.
