The UN has published a report analyzing the human rights situation in Crimea during the 10 years of its occupation.
The report separately highlighted the imposition of Russian citizenship, the legal and administrative systems of russia on Ukrainian territories, demographic changes, the use of repressive tactics against those who disagree with the occupation, and the suppression of the expression of religious views, one’s own culture and identity.
«Crimean citizens who disagree with the Russian occupation authorities have often faced repressive manifestations, in particular intimidation, aggressive house searches, arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture or ill-treatment, enforced disappearances and judicial harassment, which create an atmosphere of generalized fear and suppress any expression of dissent,» according to the report.
Separately, it was noted that since 2014, OHCHR has documented 104 cases of enforced disappearances of pro-Ukrainian activists, members of Crimean Tatar organizations and journalists in Crimea. As of February 26, 2024, 44 people have been released, 37 are in custody, 21 are reported missing, and two people have died.t
