Ukraine has denounced an agreement on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. This was announced by the People’s Deputy of the Rada Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

“Parliament has denounced all agreements with Russia regarding the Sea of Azov 0182 – denunciation of the Treaty between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. 0183 – withdrawal from the Agreement on the Establishment of the Black Sea Group of Naval Cooperation”,- the message says.

The agreement was signed between Ukraine and the Russian Federation in Kerch on December 24, 2003, and provided for the following: freedom of navigation for ships flying the flags of the Russian Federation or Ukraine; ships of other countries can enter the Sea of Azov only if they are sent on a visit or a business call to the port of one of the parties (by prior invitation); conflicts between the parties related to the interpretation and application of the treaty are resolved through consultations and negotiations, as well as other peaceful means.

Since the treaty was denounced, now the status of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait remains uncertain.
