On October 23, during a side event, former political prisoner and
First Deputy Chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People
Nariman Dzhelial expressed his opinion on the international
recognition of the deportation of Crimean Tatars as an act of
genocide.
“I believe that the time will come when the situation in Russia itself will change, and we will make efforts to do so, and the Russian authorities will be held accountable. I hope that the president of the current Russian Federation will be brought to justice. Of course, we cannot wait for that time – we have to make decisions today, and the appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to all international parliaments to recognize the deportation as genocide is one of the
tools we have to implement,” – Nariman said.
The Deputy Chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people also
fully agreed with the opinion of Eskender Bariiev, Chairman of the
Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, that the deportation and
punishment has not yet received its logical conclusion.
“Indeed, it is necessary to put an end to it. The perpetrators must be
brought to justice. After all, you see that Russia is repeating
everything it has done before, and to prevent this, it is necessary to
finalize this issue and recognize the truth both for ourselves and for
the whole world,” – emphasized Nariman Dzhelial.
Taking this opportunity, Dzhelial also addressed the members of the
Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine: “We expect you to make concrete decisions to protect and guarantee the rights of the Crimean Tatar people.”
