24 September 2001 saw the establishment of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples, which was renamed the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007.
This decision was taken by the UN Commission on Human Rights (Human Rights Council since 2006) to oversee the rights of indigenous peoples around the world. The Rapporteur’s main task is to protect the rights of these peoples, assess situations of rights violations and provide recommendations to governments and international organizations to improve the situation of indigenous peoples.
The Crimean Tatar Resource Center has been actively working with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples for many years to inform him and the world about the situation of indigenous peoples in Ukraine in relation to the occupation of their land and Russia’s full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine, human rights violations and war crimes against the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.
This work helps raise awareness globally and contributes to international pressure on countries that violate indigenous peoples’ rights, which is a key element in achieving justice.
Let’s keep up the good work!
