Russian textbooks contain disinformation about Crimea, Mariupol and NATO – WION

March 18, 2024

Russian school textbooks spread disinformation about the occupied territories, the war and NATO. This was reported by a columnist for the Indian portal WION.

According to the publication, the textbook, developed for the subject “Fundamentals of Security and Defence of the Fatherland”, is intended to replace the existing curriculum “Fundamentals of Safe Living” in Russia and the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In it, the authors glorify Stalin and celebrate past “victories”, including the occupation of Crimea in 2014, which they call “the reunification of Crimea with Russia”.

“When a coup d’état took place in Kyiv in 2014, the new government launched an offensive against everything Russian, Russian books were burned, monuments destroyed, Russian songs and the Russian language itself were banned… Restaurants served cocktails with ‘Russian blood’,”- the book says.

Critics have reportedly condemned the textbook as fabricated disinformation and lies.
