Russia wants to rejoin the UN Human Rights Council in upcoming elections, from which it was expelled last year after the war against Ukraine began.
Russian diplomats are now seeking their country’s re-election to the council for a new three-year term.
We remind you that the UN Human Rights Council is an international human rights body within the UN system. The main goal of the Human Rights Council is the international protection and respect for civil, political, economic, social and cultural human rights, regardless of race, gender, language or religion, which does not concern Russia.
But does the Russian Federation have the right to remain a member of the UN Human Rights Council?
Does a country that commits terrible crimes against humanity, kills and tortures people, deports children, commits genocide of the Ukrainian people, grossly violates human rights and does not comply with international law have the right to be in the UN at all?
