Pro-Russian media in Crimea: who is brainwashing Crimeans?

September 21, 2023

Under the conditions of the long-term occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, which began in 2014, the problem of freedom of speech on the peninsula has become widespread. The Russian Federation increased pressure on pro-Ukrainian media, which led to their complete liquidation.

So, at first, professional journalists continued to work on the peninsula, but as pressure grew, most of them were forced to leave for mainland Ukraine, while some remained and clandestinely prepared materials for the Ukrainian media.

Today, pro-Russian Crimean media are actively disseminating propaganda, Moscow narratives and fake news about the noble goal of the Northern Military District, crimes of the Ukrainian army, Kyiv regime, Nazis, Bandera etc.

Indeed, people, having lived in such an information space for decades, lose the ability to think critically and analyze the situation.

What media in Crimea spread Russian propaganda?

The total number of subscribers on the online resources of these media reaches 254 thousand people. That’s how many people are being systematically brainwashed. As always, with the help of lies and manipulation, the occupiers are trying to win over the population of Crimea to their side.

The deoccupation of Crimea is approaching and it is very important to think through the first steps in information policy on the peninsula, taking into account the specifics and all the features. In particular, the recommendations for the reintegration of Crimea, which were developed during the strategic forum Future of Crimea, contain a separate section on this matter.
