President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on awarding the Order For Courage III degree (posthumously) to the former Ukrainian political prisoner Hennadii Afanasiiev, who died at the front near Bilohorivka (Luhansk region) in December 2022.
We remind you that in 2014, Hennadii spoke out against the Russian occupation of Crimea, after which he was detained in Simferopol by FSB officers on charges of preparing terrorist attacks. Together with him, other defendants in this case were also detained. However, later he still managed to return to his homeland thanks to another exchange.
Subsequently, the man moved to the United States, but after the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, Hennadii Afanasiiev went to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The former political prisoner is survived by his wife and little daughter, who was born in October 2020.
