On Tuesday, February 21, a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on the organization of state power, local self-government, regional development and urban planning, as well as a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on the administrative-territorial structure of Ukraine took place.

The meeting was attended by a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center Eskender Bariiev.

The Committee considered the issues of supplementing the Law of Ukraine On Geographical Names, which included items in accordance with the provisions of the Law of Ukraine On the Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine.

“These changes will make it possible to get rid of imperial and communist names on the territory of the Crimean peninsula and restore the historical names of the indigenous peoples of Crimea. In addition, it is very important to make such changes so that there are no legal conflicts in the future”,- Bariiev explained.

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center thanks MP Vitalii Bezhin and Roman Lozynskyy for this initiative. These amendments were introduced by the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and prepared by the lawyers of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.
