“Indigenous peoples from all over the world know what is happening in Ukraine and are aware of the situation with the occupation of Crimea” – Korotkykh

May 3, 2023

During the Crimean issue programme on Suspilne Crimea TV channel, the CTRC manager Liudmyla Korotkykh spoke about the work of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center delegation during the 22nd session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting. Liudmyla spoke about the international community’s perception of statements made by Ukraine and Russia, and why it is important to participate in these and other international platforms. She also shared what results we have achieved already and what we expect to achieve in the future.

Liudmyla Korotkykh noted that since 2020, when there were certain restrictions due to the active COVID-19 epidemic, the delegation has participated only online, but this year our country has the opportunity to attend the forum offline.

“It feels completely different, because you have more opportunities to communicate and convey the information and issues that concern you. I and Eskender Bariiev, the Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, took an active part in the plenary sessions, but given the large number of participants who wanted to speak, it was a balanced representation. Despite this, we had quite successful statements that were supported by the audience,” explained the manager of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.

According to Liudmyla Korotkykh, there was quite a lot of interest among indigenous representatives who do not hold any positions or posts in the UN structures.

“As a rule, indigenous peoples have certain problems with states, and therefore they already have a certain prejudice against what the country declares. Realizing that since 2014 we have been actively working on all these platforms and constantly talking about the fact that Russia is lying and spreading propaganda, people who have been participating in this forum for years understood that this is just another act of Russian propaganda.

“After February 24, the whole world realized that nothing meaningful could be heard from Russia. Of course, no one interrupted the speech, but the community did not react to it either,” said the CTRC manager.
