Demand for housing in Crimea has fallen – Bariiev

June 6, 2023

Eskender Bariiev, the Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, member of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, spoke in an interview with FREEDOM TV channel about the confiscation and ‘nationalization’ of Ukrainians’ property in Crimea.

“We know that people who come from Kherson region… earlier we said that they provide housing certificates for Ukrainian citizens in Kherson region who get Russian passports, and there are even cases with Ukrainian passports. And the next process took place – they have already started to deal with Zaporizhzhia region, that is, with people who come from Zaporizhzhia region as well. Therefore, if earlier they only provided these certificates for the purchase of new housing, now they are for construction, which was a long procedure, now they have gone as far as buying out secondary housing,” Bariiev said.

According to the member of Mejlis, the occupiers are likely to use several methods.

“On the one hand, the construction of new housing, on the other hand, the purchase of secondary housing. But why would they build new housing when they can confiscate it, ‘nationalize’ it and give it to these people? Thus, in the future, it will set some Ukrainian citizens against other Ukrainian citizens and create a conflict situation. However, taking into account the situation with the counteroffensive and the explosions in Crimea at military and strategic facilities, the demand for housing has fallen. And they are trying to compensate this at the cost of the federal budget. However, they lack the money to do this. In particular, the housing of Ukrainian citizens who were forced to leave Crimea will be used,” Eskender Bariiev added.
