On October 20-21, manager of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center Liudmyla Korotkykh took part in the conference United for Justice. United for the Environment in Kyiv, which was organized by the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources with the assistance of the EUEU, UNDP, OSCE, and the EU Law-Justice Project.

The event was attended by ministers, representatives of the High-Level Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War, created under the Office of the President of Ukraine, UN international programs, European Union institutions, the International Criminal Court, leading experts in the field of international law and environmental security, public activists and government officials .

“Over the course of two days, many issues were discussed and important figures were made public. For example, for a full year of a full-scale war in Ukraine, 119 million tons of CO2 equivalent were released into the atmosphere, 21.9 of which were emissions as a result of combat operations, and another 17.7 as a result of fires”,- noted Liudmyla.

In addition, during one of the panels they talked about the definition of ecocide, international precedents (which in fact there are no) and what is being done to ensure that the crime of ecocide is included in the Rome Statute (ICC Statute). The team of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center has been working on this topic for a long time.

“Given the interest in the event at the level of senior Ukrainian officials and the government’s announced plans, it becomes clear that Ukraine has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming a leader in the eco-movement and I hope that this is indeed the case. And we, in turn, are ready to help the state promote these important initiatives, including through active participation in the framework of COP-28, which will take place very soon”,- added Liudmyla.
