Lithuania commemorates the anniversary of the declaration of independence

February 18, 2025
On Sunday, 16 February, Lithuania celebrated the Day of Restoration of Statehood, commemorating the events of 1918, when the Lithuanian Seimas (Council) under the leadership of Jonas Basanavičius proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Lithuania. This day symbolises the rebirth of the Lithuanian nation and its desire for freedom and self-determination.

Historical ties between Lithuania and the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar peoples go back a long way, reflecting the common pages of the struggle for independence. In modern times, Lithuania is one of Ukraine’s most loyal allies in countering Russian aggression. The country provides significant military and humanitarian assistance and supports the Ukrainian people in the international arena.

We remind you that in 2019, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania recognized the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 as an act of genocide, condemning the crimes of the totalitarian Soviet regime against the Crimean Tatars. This decision was a significant step in restoring historical justice and supporting the rights of the Crimean Tatar people.

The CTRC expresses its sincere gratitude to the Republic of Lithuania for its consistent support and cooperation in defending the rights of the Crimean Tatars and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. We wish the Lithuanian people peace, prosperity and further success on the path of strengthening statehood and democratic values!
