Crimean Solidarity journalist Amet Suleymanov was sentenced to 12 years in a strict regime colony despite his poor health. It is reported by the Crimean solidarity.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has sentenced political prisoner Amet Suleymanov. The details were reported by his wife, Lilia Lumanova.

“They said that a document with a seal had arrived, that the verdict had come into force. I asked if we could have at least 10 minutes, we didn’t eat a fast in the month of Ramadan for a whole day. I asked him to give at least 15 minutes for him to eat and get dressed. They said no, we must quickly carry it away. Amet only managed to do the evening prayer and get dressed”,- she said.

While he was changing clothes, the workers of the Federal Penitentiary Service watched him through the windows overlooking the courtyard.

“We consider this sentence to be death because his state of health and the conditions of his stay in these institutions are incompatible. Amet has a lot of diseases: heart, lungs, stomach, and joints, just recently, gonarthrosis was confirmed in him – this is the destruction of cartilaginous joints”,- added his wife.

Serhii Zaiets, who is Suleimanov’s lawyer and his representative on the UN Committee Against Torture, said that the Committee called on the Russian Federation to suspend the execution of the sentence and insists on a medical examination and treatment for the journalist.

“This interim decision of the committee gives a chance to save the life of the convict, but, unfortunately, does not exclude the execution of a clearly unjust sentence”,- human rights activists commented on the decision.

Amet Suleymanov is on the waiting list for a heart valve transplant. He suffers from arterial and mitral insufficiency. In addition, even under the occupational legislation, this disease is included in the list of impediments to detention.

We remind you that on March 11, Russian security forces raided the houses of Crimean Tatars in Bakhchysarai and the Bakhchysarai region with searches. Searches were carried out in the house of Seytumer Seytumerov, Shukri Seytumerov, Amet Suleymanov, Seidamet Mustafaiev, Rustem Seitmemetov, Aider Suleymanov. A number of activists were detained. On October 29, 2021, Amet Suleymanov was sentenced to 12 years in a strict regime colony with the first 3 years and 6 months in prison.
