The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for former Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
This is stated in a press release on the ICC website.
The former Russian defence minister and the chief of the general staff, according to the ICC, are responsible for war crimes consisting of strikes against civilian objects and committed between 10 October 2022 and 9 March 2023.
“There are reasonable grounds to believe that the suspects intentionally caused great suffering or serious bodily harm or mental or physical injury, thus incurring criminal responsibility for a crime against humanity,” the court said in a statement.
The contents of the warrants are classified to protect witnesses, but the ICC decided that information about the warrants could prevent further offences.
